This is annoying when we develop web pages with CSS. If you involve in developing or designing web pages you might encounter with this issue. In CSS we can not make same height columns unless giving the exact height in pixels. But there are situations that web developer can not give exact height to columns.

Here is a normal example of columns designed with CSS:

You can see that above two columns are not equal height even they containing within one main container (main ‘div’).

However we can easily use tables to make same height columns. creating web sites with tables are however not acceptable by XHTMl and manipulating with tables tricky. So we avoid tables to design web pages.

OK, let’s see how we can make same height columns using CSS.
There are few methods and hacks that you can apply. But my most favorable and effective method is using a handy javascript code written by Paul. Get the javascript snippet here (columns.js). The web site provides how to use javascript code to make same height columns in CSS.

Another method is using faux columns. It’s all about playing with colors and cheating visitors. you can add a small vertically repeated background image to main ‘div’ and using a clearing effect. Read more about faux columns.

But javascript method is welcomed by many web designers who create web sites with validated XHTML.

Why people value highly those most searched key words?
The best answer to the above question is they need to know the trend and adjust their web sites and blog posts which addresses those key words to get the maximum visitors and thereby EARNINGS. Isn’t it?

We carried out a little research on most searched and most wanted key words of Google and other search engines. here are the results with analysis.

Google zeitgeist.
What is Google zeitgeist (meaning of the zeitgeist is : the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era)
Google zeitgeist provides useful all around data on most searched and most falling key words of different regions and years.

Here are the top 10 searches (Web Search) of United States during 2009.

  5. yahoo
  6. myspace
  7. games
  8. my
  9. google
  10. craigslist

Did you see that Google is in the 9th place and facebook taken over 1st place on google web search. We can not exactly tell why people are searching for the terms you and my in Google. However my assumption is this is an effect of using Google tool bar. People uses short terms for youtube and myspace. When you search the web with Google tool bar, popular search suggestions generate before ending up typing. So people just hit the ‘Enter’ without selecting the suggestion.

Then we will move on most rising or developing key words on Google. There is list of 10 of them as follows:

  6. youtube.com
  7. yahoomail
  8. face :D
  9. coupons :(

Did you see that Google Tool bar effect also in here with the key word of face. And search for coupons led by recession.

Technology Computers and Internet.
Let’s move on what people most searched during 2009 relating to Computers and Internet. Here is the list of top ten:

Developing search / keywords of technology and computers are:

  1. palm pre
  2. windows7
  3. explorer 8

It’s interesting that why google chrome is not in both of above lists. facebook dominates on each of above lists saying that people are more likes to be social and it is good news for Facebook admins and now they can concentrate about how to take the advantage of massive visitors. Yeah Facebook ads are a great way to capitalize the massive traffic.
